In the event of a dental emergency, there are several steps you can take to preserve your oral health as you wait for medical attention. Below is a list of common dental emergencies and corresponding home remedies:
Chipped Tooth: In the event of a chipped tooth, rinse out your mouth with warm water and apply gauze to any areas that are bleeding. In addition, be sure to collect loose pieces, as your dental professional may be able to reconstruct your tooth following treatment.
Lost Crown: If you’re experiencing pain ahead of your appointment, apply clove oil to the exposed area. If possible, work to temporarily reattach the crown using dental cement or toothpaste as an adhesive.
Dislodged Tooth: Rinse off the tooth root, taking care not to remove attached tissue. Once the tooth has been cleaned, attempt to gently insert the tooth back into the socket. If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk or saltwater ahead of your appointment.
Lost Filling: First, attempt to locate the filling. If you’re able to find the device, be sure to bring it to your appointment. In the meantime, fill the exposed area with a chunk of dental wax or dental cement to prevent complications.
